Insects, mites, bumblebees, and biopesticides: the Kempen-based company Biobest is the global market leader in biological crop protection and pollination.
From bumblebees to your plate
From bumblebee breeder to a versatile biological player now worth over 1 billion euros. The Kempen-based Biobest (Westerlo) is one of the world’s most prominent companies in the field of biological crop protection and natural pollination. Their product range includes a wide variety of beneficial insects, mites, bumblebees, nematodes, monitoring and scouting tools, and pheromones.
The European Green Deal aims to halve the use of pesticides by 2030. However, due to increasing crop resistance, farmers are being forced to use more and more chemical products to combat pests and diseases. With biological products, that issue doesn’t arise. They are also healthier for the people who work with them and for those who ultimately enjoy them as part of a delicious meal.
Acquisition of BIOTROP
In 2023, Biobest acquired the Brazilian company BIOTROP, a specialist in biological control agents. This marked a major leap forward for the company from the Kempen. The range of beneficial insects was expanded with products based on smaller organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
High-tech solutions
Biobest also offers high-tech IPM solutions that make crop protection more data-driven and sustainable. Growers can monitor pests and diseases in real time via their smartphone or tablet, allowing for even more efficient interventions – with fewer chemicals.
